Typical battery cost by usable capacity

Battery quotes should be compared on usable capacity, not just headline capacity. A 9.5kWh battery with a different usable allowance is not always equivalent to another 9.5kWh product.

Installation cost also changes if the battery is added to an existing solar system rather than fitted with a new hybrid inverter from day one.

What you are paying for

A battery price includes more than a box on the wall. You are paying for cells, battery management, inverter compatibility, monitoring, electrical protection, commissioning and installation labour.

Some systems offer backup power features. Others are designed mainly for solar self-consumption and tariff shifting. Backup capability is useful for some homes, but it can add cost and should not be assumed.

Tesla Powerwall-style versus modular batteries

A larger all-in-one battery can suit homes with high electricity demand and a clean place to install it. Modular systems can be more flexible because capacity can sometimes be added in stages.

Brand comparisons should start with the job the battery has to do: store daytime solar, charge on off-peak tariffs, support a heat pump, cover evening EV charging, or provide backup. A famous brand name is not a sizing method.

When a battery may not be worth it

A battery is harder to justify if the home uses most solar electricity during the day already, has a strong export tariff, or has low evening consumption. It may still be wanted for resilience or tariff control, but that is a different reason from pure payback.

The cleanest test is to model solar generation, daytime use, export rate, import rate and expected battery cycling. If the numbers rely on perfect daily cycling all year, be suspicious.

Common questions

How much does a solar battery cost in the UK?

Many installed domestic batteries fall between GBP 2,500 and GBP 11,000 depending on usable capacity and specification. Larger or backup-capable systems can cost more.

Can I add a battery later?

Often yes, but the cost and complexity depend on your inverter, available space, wiring and whether the existing system was designed with storage in mind.
